Picture Reminder and Not-so-extemporaneous Speaking

Picture Retake day is October 22nd.
Students MUST bring in the packet they are receiving today in order to get retakes.  No packet/no retake.  We do have extra order forms for any students absent on picture day.

Not-So-Extemporaneous Speaking
Not-So-Extemporaneous Speaking is a fun way of getting students introduced to public speaking.  I will be taking 4 students each week, on the last day of the week, to get up and talk about whatever they want.  The catch is, they have to fill out my cue card ahead of time and maybe do some research on their topic.

Friday speakers are:
Ryan R.
Jaydree W.
Daniel F.
Kelly W.

Rules for Extemporaneous Speaking
  1. Yes, pets are allowed.  If you and your student agree that your pet is class friendly and can be transported without headache, they can visit the class first thing in the morning and go home or last thing of the day.
  2. If your pet isn't class friendly or is a headache to transport, please take photos/video and email to me.  I can display this while the student is giving their talk.
  3. Come prepared.  Bring the object you are talking about.  Cue cards will be kept in class.
  4. Speak in a loud voice.  (Level 4)   People in the back should be able to hear you.
  5. At the end of each talk, students will take 3 questions from the audience.

Kate McGwire from Mix 106!

As the culminating activity for finishing  Radio 5th Grade  , Kate McGwire, morning show host from Mix 106, came in and talked to us about what being on the radio is like.  The students had a lot of great questions for her.  She finished the session by signing autographs and taking pictures.

Scholastic Writing and Art Contests

Since I have so many amazing writers and artists, I am offering two contests to be worked on in spare time, either at school and/or at home.   They are both offered by Scholastic and both grand prizes are Skype sessions and class parties sponsored by either R.L. Stine or Rick Riordan.  Below is a link for contest rules and regulations.

For the week of September 14th - 17th

We have a lot of exciting things going on in 5th grade this week.  We will be starting our unit on Engineering/Technology with the focus being on how to protect our planet.  Our first spelling test is this week.  In addition, 5th grade has started the art unit on blending with watercolors.  You may have also heard about our hamburger project.  It is rather interesting that certain hamburgers are molding, like they should, while others look and smell the same as day one.  Last but not least, we have been reading "Radio 5th Grade" and doing some research on radio jargon.  As a culminating event to the book, Kate McGwire from Mix 106 has agreed to be a guest speaker in the class!

Here are some important dates for your calendar:

  1. Thursday, September 17th - Spelling Test
