It's the busy week, everyone has been waiting for!   It's our field trip, cookie dough week!  Grab your day planner:

Tuesday

Wednesday
Reading calendars will be due from now until Wednesday, March 8th.

Thursday
Field Trip/Cookie Dough Pick up
If you are scheduled to chaperon, the busses leave at 8:45ish.  You may follow behind us or meet us at the Swayne Auditorium.  Students are allowed to dress up fancy for the concert for free.  The concert starts at 9:40 and is about an hour.

I am still in need of at least one more person who can help with the unloading.  Click the link below to sign up.

If you are scheduled to help out with cookie dough unloading/organizing, please don't forget to bring gloves.  The boxes are packed on dry ice and will be very chilly.  The delivery driver is supposed to call me when they are 20 minutes away.  I will call you asap.  They need to unload at our gym.  Mr. Berg (PE teacher) graciously lended us the East wall to unload at.

If you ordered cookie dough, I will be sending it home with your student, as I have no where to store it.  If your student is absent that day, please have a sibling pick it up.

Yes!   We do have school on Monday.  The parents and board voted to make Monday, February 20th a make up day.  On the bright side, the students get Friday, February 24th off :)

Quick Reminders:  1.  February Reading Calendars due the beginning of March.  (there are only 2 more Reading Calendars left in 5th grade!)  2.  Student's hand typed books need parenting edits done before Spring Break.

Here is what you can expect from this week:

Monday, February 20th
Field trip permission slips are due.   If you want to help cover the cost of the bus ride, a $2.oo donation would greatly be appreciated.  If you lost your slip, you may send in a handwritten note with the following verbiage:

I give my student, ___________________________, in Mrs. Evans 5th grade class permission to attend the Boise Philharmonic Children's Concert Field Trip.  In consideration of acceptance of the permission slip, I for myself, child or guardianship agree to waive any claim against Vision Charter School, its employees, or its agents for injuries that may occur as participation in the field trip.  VCS personnel are authorized to secure emergency medical assistance for my child in the event it is needed and I cannot be reached.  I hereby attest that I have read, understand, and agree to the above statement.

Calling all Volunteers

I am going to be in need of numerous volunteers for 2 events happening on the same day.  Thursday, March 2nd.  Please read very carefully what you are getting into :)

Boise Philharmonic Children's Concert
If you want to go to the concert, here are the expectations:
1.  You must drive yourself.
2.  No siblings are allowed.
3.  You will be assigned a group of 6 students that you must keep with you at all times.
4.  You will be responsible for keeping the students in your group quiet during the performance.

If I didn't scare you off, here is the perk . . .you are paid for.  :)  Click the link below to sign up.  It is first come, first serve.  I only have space for 5 volunteers.

Cookie Dough Unload and Organize
Here is what to expect:
1.  The truck arrives between 12:40 and 2, so you are kind of "on call".  The truck will call me when they are about 20 minutes out.  I will call you.
2.  You will need to bring gloves to help unload the boxes of cookie dough off the truck.  The dough is packed on dry ice and you don't want to burn your skin.
3. You will need to tape the Alphabet on the East Gym wall.
4.  As you unload the truck, the individual cookie dough boxes have the student's name (who sold the boxes) on them.  Please place them under the appropiate letter of the alphabet on the East Gym wall.
5.  After you finish unloading, you are good to go.

Click the link to sign up.

For the week of February 13th - 17th

Welcome back to another 5 day work week :0)   I just wanted to say thank you for those who participated in the cookie dough sales and/or made donations to our field trip.  We were able to raise enough money to go on a fabulous field trip and participate in the "Wagons Ho" program.  I will be sending more information out about each of these as the dates get closer.  I will also be needing volunteers to help chaperon too.

Homework
As a part of getting students ready for middle school, I will be sending out more homework.  Most of the work, should only take 30 minutes or less.  Please be asking your student about their homework.  I hand it to them as we walk out the door to the buses so it cannot be forgotten about.  :)

Cookie Dough
The orders have been placed and will be due to arrive within a 2-3 week period.  Prizes will also arrive at the same time as cookie dough.

Fractions
The students have been working really hard to understand all the processes involved with Fractions.  At this point, they should be able to tell you the following:

  1. Define a fraction
  2. Label the parts of fraction
  3. Be able to factor a number and use a factor tree to find the prime factorization
  4. Define the difference between a prime and composite number
  5. Reduce or find the simplest form of a fraction
  6. Add/Subtract fractions with common denominators
This week, will we be adding how to deal with uncommon denominators.  I spend a fair amount of time with this concept, as it is a crucial one.  I also understand that if you haven't touched this concept since you were in 5th grade, it may be difficult to help with homework.  I will be posting video tutorials on my blog to help both students and parents.  If you are really struggling, please don't hesitate to email me for the same reasons I have to email my son's high school math teacher.  lol

Story Books
You may have already heard about the books we are writing in class.  It is a free program we participate in every year.  In my class, I give the students free reign to make what ever kind of book they want.  This year, I have everything from mysteries, cookbooks, fan fiction, graphic novels to dictionaries of favorite things and autobiographies.  I am impressed with the creativity of my students.  Here is where I NEED YOUR HELP.  I cannot successfully edit 31 books before Spring Break.  I promised all students that I would help edit 3 paragraphs.  The rest of the editing belongs to you.  I will send out directions later in the week on how to help your student edit their book . . .with minimal tears.

Tuesday, Feburary 14th -Valentine's Day, Pizza Money Due
Thank you to those who donated to our party.  I will be making pancakes for the kids on Tuesday afternoon.  We will also be sharing Valentines then too.  Please make sure that if you choose to give Valentines, that you include everyone.   Please remember that we have nut and egg allergies.   For our art project this week, we will be making paper bag Valentine's mail boxes.  Students are welcome to bring in their own materials, but I will supply the bags.
