End of the semester . . . .1/2 the year over . . . .It's hard to believe it but it's true!  Here is what you can expect this week:

Advisory
We are collecting used but clean sheets and blankets, along with pet food for the Canyon County Animal shelter.  Any donations would be greatly appreciated.

Mrs. Warr and I will be hosting our auctions on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.  In my advisory, I will be having a hot cocoa bar on Thursday.  If anyone is interested in donating to the party, please click on the link below to sign up.  Thanks :)

Reading
We are finishing up reading Charles Dickens' classic "A Christmas Carol" and will be taking the semester final on Wednesday of this week.  Students will be allowed to use their notes from all semester long to assist in taking the final.

Science
We are wrapping up the portion of Invent Idaho that can be done at school.  By Wednesday, students need to have #1-8 in their Inventor's Journal completed.  Steps #9 and #10 will need to be completed at home.  Projects will be due January 18th.  For a complete list of steps, please click the link below.

Math 1
The semester final will take place on Thursday, December 21st.  There will be a review all day in class on Tuesday, December 19th.  Student will be allowed to use their math journal on the semester final. :)  On a side note, the math games day turned out amazing!  I loved seeing how the students used their ingenuity and math skills to make fun ways to practice math.

For the week of December 4th - 8th

Can you believe we are coming up on the 1/2 way point of 6th grade?  That's right!  There are only 3 weeks left until the end of the semester and the beginning of Christmas break!

Here is what you can expect:

Math
I just introduced our semester math project on Friday. Rubrics were also given in the math challenge packet.

  1. Students will be either creating a game, a poster, a song or a play using concepts, terms and problem types from any of our previously learned chapters.  This includes all of Topic 1, Topic 2, Topic 3 and Topic 7.
  2. The project must be neat, clear and contain appropriate math concepts and language as discussed in class and found in the math journal.
  3. It must be original and creative.
  4. All projects will be presented on Friday, December 15th.
  5. Projects must include 10-15 math problems or questions, as well as solutions.  If you do a song or a play, problems can be presented before, after or during the presentation.  Classmates can answer on whiteboards or be given a paper/pencil task.

There will also be a semester final.  The final will include problems from each Topic we have covered.  The review for this final will be given to the students online and can be worked on from Thursday, December 14th until its due date on Tuesday, December 19th.  The final will be given on Thursday, December 21st.

Reading
We will be tackling another classic in the next 3 weeks . . ..Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.  Our focus for this unit, in addition to comprehension and vocab, will be prediction (a pre-reading skill), the plot, rising action and conclusions, as well as character development.

There will be a semester final.  The final will include all the literary terms we have learned this year.  It will be an open notebook test but, it is important that the students understand what the terms mean.  We have already starting talking about what these questions will look like.

Science
We are wrapping up our unit on weather and air pressure.  The students have even had a chance to build their own pressure measuring device. Students were also introduced to the Invent Idaho challenge.  This competition is taking the place of the science fair.  All students must do a project.  Students are allowed to work in groups of up to 3 people but each student is responsible for their own inventors journal.  We have been working on the journals in class but the display board and prototype (either working or non-working) must be completed at home.  We are bouncing around science night dates for the 3rd or 4th week in January.  Winners of this competition go on to the district competition in Boise on January 27th at the JUMP center.  For more information and rules, I sent packets home or you can go online to www.inventidaho.com

There will not be a semester final in science.  All my tests are already comprehensive and built off of previous skills.

Service Project for December
The class voted on a service project for December.  They wanted to help the Canyon County Animal Shelter by collected gently used blankets, sheets, towels, and animal food.  It is also a great way to jumpstart that spring cleaning ;)

For the busy week before Thanksgiving Break - November 13th - 17th

Hello all!
Has this Fall flown fast for you too?  It's already November with December right on its heels!  Here is what you can expect this week.

Report Cards
If you did not come to student led parent-teacher conferences, your student's  progress report card will be coming home this Monday for you to sign and return. If you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to schedule an appointment for after school.

Canned Food Drive
As always, our school is doing the canned food drive to help local families in need of assistance. We are in need of gift cards to buy turkeys and all the canned fixings that go to make Thanksgiving dinner, as well as stock pantries.  Sadly no home-made items can be accepted.  Please also keep in mind to check for expiration dates. :)

Costa Rica
Yes!  It is true, I am hosting a trip to Costa Rica in the Summer of 2019 for middle and high school students and parents.  If you are interested in learning more, please attend my parent meeting this Tuesday, November 14th at 6pm in my classroom (rm 113).  Hope to see you there.

Math 1
We are finishing up Topic 3.  The review for the test will be on Tuesday.  The test will be this Thursday.

Reading
The class is finishing up Sleepy Hollow.  Their end of book project, which is pulling descriptive text about all the main characters and typing it up, is due this Friday.  End of book projects are worth 100 points, which is about the same as 5-7 assignments.  Students should be taking their time and putting in a fair amount of effort into these projects.

Science
We are continuing to work with Air Pressure.  The class just completed a lab that had them build their own "Pressure measuring device" to better  understand how our own planet's invisible air pressure is detectable. The lab type up is a 50 point project that, just like the end of book project, should be done with extra care and effort.  Students need to be focusing on writing clear observations, as well as making thoughtful connections in their conclusions.

Building the device

Experimenting

Trying to figure out how it works

Writing down observations

For the week of November 6th - 10th

It was nice seeing you at the Student-Led Parent Teacher Conferences.  If you couldn't make it during that time and would still like to have a meeting, please email me a date and time that would work for you after school.

We are in our 2 week countdown to Thanksgiving Break.  Here is what you can expect this week:

1.  It is College Application Week.  Although 6th grade has a few more years to think about what to do with their future, our school being a college prep school, celebrates College Application Week. At the middle school level, we focus on choosing to "go on".  Advisories will celebrate with decorating doors with Teacher's alma maters ( Go Griz!)  and  have a collegiate wear day.

2. Costa Rica
Yes! You heard right. I am planning an adventure field trip to Costa Rica for early summer of 2019.  If you are interested in learning more, please attend the informational meeting on Tuesday, November 14th in room 113 at 6pm.  The trip is open to students in 6th grade-12th grade, parents of students in those grades and alumni of Vision Charter.

Hope to see you at the meeting!

Math 1
We are finishing up Topic 3 - Equations and Inequalities in Math.  We will have a Topic test on the Thursday before we leave for Thanksgiving Break.

Reading
The class has read several different versions of Washington Irving's Legend of Sleepy Hollow.  This week we will be classifying and characterizing the list of main characters.  We also will start handwriting/cursive practice this week.

Science
We wrapped up on unit on Air pressure and will have a lab on how pressure affect air.

Home Econ
As the holidays approach, I will be working with the students on cookie making and decorating.

For the week of October 30th - November 3rd.

Here is what you can expect this week:

There will be an all school celebration of Journey to the Center of the Earth on October 31st with treats and the movie Journey to the Center of the Earth. This movie is PG. If your parent would like you to skip out on this movie, please ask them to drop me an email. If you choose to bring a treat please make sure it is dairy free and peanut free. Here is a list of treats that are dairy free and peanut free: pretzels, fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, lunch meat and cheese slices, popcorn and most potato and corn chips. We will begin our celebration during 3rd period. Don't forget you can dress up as a character/scene from the book. Your imagination is your only limit. PS. (That and the dress code 😉)

Student Lead Parent Teacher Conferences
Will take place from 3:30 - 7:00 pm on November 2nd and 3rd of this week.  This is a new format you may not have experienced.  Students will lead parents on a tour of the school/their classes and talk about the programs they use.  Report cards will be available for pick up and all middle school/ high school teachers will be in the gym to visit with.  There will also be a parent survey to fill out.  Parents and students finishing the conference checklist will be entered in a drawing for a free movie ticket.

Math 1
We just finished our Topic 2 test.  I think a lot of the students were surprised how much studying is required to do well in math this year.  The program we use, Digits, moves rather fast and each concept builds off of one another.  Even if your student doesn't have homework, they should be studying math every night.  They can be reworking problems from their student workbook or can even go online back into the slides and do the "Close and Check" section.  15-20 minutes a night will make all the difference in the world.

Reading
We are working on reading and digesting (aka comprehension) of all types of literature and informational text.  The class is covering everything from classic stories to speeches given by Presidents.  We will be moving into small book-club like reading groups to work on literary circles to assist on comprehending literary texts independently.

**Book orders will be due on Wednesday**

Science
We just wrapped up our unit on weather and the atmosphere.  Students should have walked away the following "big ideas":
  1. Weather is a set of environmental conditions at one time in one place.
  2. Weather conditions that can be measured and recorded include temperature, air pressure and humidity.
  3. Air has mass and takes up space.
  4. Air is made of particles that can be compressed or expanded.
  5. Earth is surrounded by a layer of gases called the atmosphere and each layer is integral to life on this planet.
Home Econ
We continued on with seasonal treats and using the apples that were graciously donated to our class.  The students made pan made cinnamon applesauce.  This week we will tackle pretzels.

JOBS

Its our last week of school before Fall Break.  Here is what you can expect:

Reading
We are finishing up Journey to the Center of the Earth.  The end of book project is called a Chapter Map.  This is due Wednesday.  I posted examples on Edmodo.   It basically has to include a chapter title, a picture or two depicting what happened in that chapter and a brief 3-5 summary in words recapping the chapter.  I gave the students either poster paper for posters, folders for the matchbook maps or students could use Google slides.    The project is worth 75 points.   Students will be presenting their projects in class on Thursday.

Math
We just had our first math test last Thursday and will be starting a new chapter on Tuesday.  Students were allowed to make corrections on their tests for a better grade.  This was an option and not forced.  Some students chose to keep the first grade they received.  Corrections must be made in class.

Science
We just finished our first official lab in science.  You may have heard about the syringe and air pressure experiment.  This week we will be learning all about Earth's atmosphere.

Home Ec
We are still continuing our unit on breakfast foods.  Last week we studied about the effects of baking soda and baking powder, along with how over-handling dough leads to tough biscuits.  This week we are tackling more quick breads.

The "D" word
In 6th grade we have 2 types of detentions.  Detention with a big "D" is for  things like: disturbing class, disobedience and disrespect.   Detention with a little "d" is for not doing your homework.  I haven't been making students bring home their little "d" slips yet for parent signatures.  Mrs. Warr and I have been working with the students really hard on being prepared for classes, especially when they only happen every other day.  We understand that transitioning to this style of classes isn't easy.  However, after fall break, students not completing home and being sent to detention on a regular basis for not completing work will be expected to have their slips signed by a parent.

IC
If you haven't logged into Infinite Campus' Parent Portal yet, I highly suggest you do so.  I will have grades updated again over Fall Break.  If you have any concerns, please don't hesitate to call, email or schedule an appointment after school.

For the week of September 25th - 29th

Hello all!

I hope you are finding your groove as we enter the 6th week of school.  It has flown by fast.  If you haven't had a chance yet to login to Parent Portal on Infinite Campus, I highly encourage you to do so.  If you have never logged on before, you will need to contact Amy Bowers at amybowers@visioncsd.org for your login and password.  I just updated grades this weekend and they are current as of Friday.  If you are concerned about your student's grades and don't know how to hep them, please don't hesitate to set up an after school appointment with me.

Reading
We are continuing on with Journey to the Center of the Earth.  This week we will be tackling Chapters 8, 9 and 10.  Please know that your student will most likely have homework in this subject on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  Any students with unfinished work will be sent to lunch detention to finish.  Late work receives 25% off each day it is late.

Science
We are still working on weather.  Last week the class spent several class periods working with the properties of air pressure.  It was "playing with a purpose".  This week we will be working to sum up our results and write up our first Lab paper.

Math
We have completed almost all the lessons in Unit 1.  We will be preparing for a test most likely on Thursday.  Please check Edmodo for updates.  Also, please remember that your student will have homework every night in this subject.

Home Econ
After re-working our pancake recipe, the class had another cook day on Friday.  This batch was extremely successful.  It was enjoyed by the students and the entire Admin staff.

Class JOBS

Hello all!
I hope the hustle and bustle of 6th grade is becoming more routine now.  I know it is a lot of getting used to being organized and always prepared.  Here are a few ways you can help your student:
  1. As a parent, make sure you understand what programs your student is using and how to login to these.  Students were given an internet login info sheet at the beginning of the year.  Each time we signed into a program, the students were prompted to write down their user name and password.  This sheet should be coming home when they have to login to these programs at home.  If your student lost or misplaced theirs, the link below will provide another copy.  Internet Passwords Sheet
  2. Ask to see the agenda.  In each core class, math, science, ela, social studies and reading, students are asked at the end of the class to write down what is due.
  3. Subscribe to Edmodo.  Edmodo is a platform similar to Facebook.  Our school uses Edmodo to post assignments, reminders and allows students to ask questions about assignments.  If you want to be apart of this, please subscribe following the directions below.

Keeping  informed is easier than ever

Text 27291 with the class code below and Edmodo will send you automatic updates. No smartphone required!
Class Code:

Here is what you can expect this week:

Reading
We are continuing with our unit study on Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth.  Students have been busy working on creating a book poster to entice other readers to get excited about reading this book.  The posters included the title, a tag line and all the tools needed to survive such a perilous journey.

Math
Students have now had several lessons on how Digits works.  Students were assigned chapter 1.4 pre-read and workbook activities to be completed before Tuesday's class.   If your student still is struggling with signing on at home, please contact me and we can Facetime to get this corrected before Tuesday.

Science
Our unit on weather has prompted some great discussions in class, especially pertaining to the hurricanes that have hit the east coast and what this winter might be like.  This week we started our own weather reports in class.  For the next 30 days, we will be learning how to use the National Weather Service site as a tool for reading and predicting weather.

Home Econ
We started our unit on breakfast.  Included in this unit is how to measure wet and dry ingredients along with how to convert measurements for reducing and multiplying the recipe.  Tuesday's cook day will be how to make your own homemade pancake mix.

As always, if you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me via email or set up an appointment after school.

Digits Expectations and Homework

Chances are your student is coming home with Digits homework tonight.  Here is what you can expect:

  1. They will need to go to the Digits website.  It is a link on the left-hand side of my blog, under the math tab.
  2. When logging in, all students were given their login and password info at the beginning of the year.  In every class they were instructed to write this down on their internet info sheet that is kept in their binders.   If they forgot this, their login is their legal first name and the first two (sometimes 3) letters of their last name @ vision.  The password is Vision2018.
  3. The assignment is found under the "Classes" Tab.
  4. Students are to click through the launch slide, part 1, part 2 and part 3

          5.  While students are reading through the slides, their workbook corresponds to each slide.
Page 9 corresponds to the launch slide

Page 10 corresponds to Parts 1,2 and 3

      6.  Students need to try to answer these questions to the best of their abilities.  This is what we call a pre-read activity.  A pre-read or front loading activity is to become familiar with the overall content and organization of a selection or assignment.  It is perfectly okay to not understand everything during a pre-read.  I will teach the entire lesson in class.

      7.   Students will never be marked down for trying the problems.  Pre-read activites are a participation grade.  The only way to receive a non-passing grade is to leave the problem blank or write down a silly, nonsensical answer.

**If you do not have internet access, I have textbooks I will check out to you for the year.  The textbook is identical to the online slide presentation **

For the week of Sept. 11th - 15th, Decoding all Programs and class updates

Hello all!

Welcome back to another week in 6th grade.   Here is a recap and a preview in one place.  I will also be discussing some "How to's" on some of the other programs we use, how to login and what to expect.

Infinite Campus/Parent Portal
This is probably one of the most useful tools you as a parent can use to track and stay updated on your student's' progress.  It doesn't matter how many children you have attending Vision, you will have 1 login and can view every single child's online grade book.  Please click the link below for the instructions to subscribe.

Blogs/Communication
Both Mrs. Warr and I use our blogs as weekly communications to update you on class happenings. Remember all 6th graders have both of us as teachers. While we may be advisory teachers, your student may have several other teachers.  Below is a list of teachers and what they teach:

Mrs. Warr:   Social Studies, Math tutorial, Language Arts, Robotics and an exploratory class.
jamiewarr@visioncsd.org   jamiewarr.blogspot.com

Mrs. Evans:   Earth Science, Reading, Algebra 1 and Exploratory - Home Econ.
karaevans@visioncsd.org   mrsevans6th.blogspot.com

Mrs. Paulus:  Algebra 1.
jameypaulus@visioncsd.org  (blog will be available later this week)

Mr. Berg:   Health and PE
dustyberg@visioncsd.org

Ms. Vance:   Art and Spanish
rebeccavance@visioncsd.org

Mr. and Mrs. Ellis:  Band, Orchestra, Choir
alellis@visioncsd.org      debraellis@visioncsd.org

Mr. Mark Boothby:  Student Government/Leadership
markboothby@visioncsd.org

Digits
Digits is the math program that Vision uses from 6th grade- 8th grade and Geometry.  It is an online program.  The class is set up so there is homework every night.  The homework consists of clicking through some slides that explain key concepts.  There will be pages in the student workbook that must be filled out.  The nice thing is, this is a pre-read and "frontloading" activity. Students will not be penalized for answering incorrectly.  Student's will be penalized for not trying. Jamey Paulus and I then start teaching the same chapter in class to reinforce these concepts.  Assigned questions will be started in class.  Most students will finish within the class period.  Any unfinished questions will need to be finished at home before the next math class.  Students unable to access the internet from home will be loaned a hardback homework book to complete their assignments.

IXL
IXL is another online math program we use.  In 6th grade, IXL is used to reinforce math concepts learned prior and a way to practice new ones.  Mrs. Warr is using IXL as a tool to help teach Math Tutorial.

Edmodo
Is the equivalent of an educationally based Facebook.  It allows users to interact, ask questions about assignments and have online group discussions.  It allows us teachers to post assignments, copies of worksheets, create class polls, create class discussion and communicate with parents about what is happening in class.

MyON
MyON is an online collection of books.  It is like having an entire library at your fingertips.  Students can login and read at anytime.  I will at times, have projects through MyON posted.  This allows me to have individualized reading materials for all students based on their Lexile level.  A Lexile level serves two unique functions: it is the measure of how difficult a text is OR a student's reading ability level. This allows me to challenge each student at their own level.

NewsELA
Newsela is an online kids appropriate news magazine.  Students, after knowing their Lexile level, can pick news articles from a variety of categories from science to opinion pieces.

*Please note that all logins/passwords were given out the first few weeks of school.  Students have an internet password sheet in their binders with all login information.  Teachers usually do not bring this information home with them. It is a useful time saver to bookmark all sites and have Google save passwords when logging in at home.  Links to the up above mentioned sites are found on the blogs*

Reading
This whole month we are doing a unit study on Jules Verne's Journey to Center of the Earth.  In 6th grade, I am using an adapted/abridged version.  In class we talked about how the original book was written in the 1800's and uses very descriptive and often flowery language, making it harder to decode without a history lesson of the time and a dictionary to decode older words.  While all the books key points are in our version, many of the lengthy, hard-to-follow descriptions have been shortened.  While the book is classified as science fiction, there are many science facts that we will addressing both in reading and science.  Homework will be limited right now to vocab and comprehension addressed in each chapter.

Science
We just started our unit on weather.  We have been studying forms of extreme weather and on the difference between hurricanes and tornados.  Questions brought up in class about storm formations and draining patterns from tubs and toilets have been extra credit discussion on Edmodo.  We will continue this week by tracking local weather, along with seasonal changes. Topics this week will involve the differences between Climate and Weather, along with tracking weather over extended periods of time.

Algebra 1
Last week we tackled, 1.1 and 1.2.  I ran out of time on lesson 1.2.  Homework for 1.2 will be completed in class, on Tuesday. You can expect homework on Tuesday and Thursday night.

Home Econ
We finished writing letters to ask for donations to keep our program cooking.  If you know of any community sponsor that would be willing to make either a financial donation or a food donation in the way of a gift card, please email me their contact info.  This last week we learned about measuring properly, took a knife skills test and prepared a savory and sweet hummus.  This week we are on to breakfast foods.  Tuesday will be all about crepes, quick sweet sauces and stabilized whip creams.
