I am sure you have heard all about our Zoo project. I am giving the parents the same check list the students have at school, along with the attachment for each page and a description of what needs to be accomplished. Here is also the link to print these pages at home if more are needed.
Zoo Project Printable Pages
1. Folder Cover - needs to be colored and glued on front of manila folder.
2. Zoo Name Tag - needs to decorated, colored and cut out. We will tape this to our desk the day of the Zoo Walk-through.
3. Rough 2-D draft - needs to have all features listed on attached check list and spelling must be correct.
4. Final 2-D draft (due 12/10) - needed to be colored and labeled. Spelling counts.
5. Area and Perimeter (due 12/12) - needs to be calculated for each building/cage/special feature of the zoo.
6. Map/Key/Legend (due 12/12) - this can be a map of zoo, a key to read your 2-D prints or a legend representing the animals in the zoo. Spelling counts.
7. "Zoom in" Habitat Packet (due 12/16) - includes 1. rough draft 2. final draft 3. picture
The Zoom in Habitat is where students pick their favorite exhibit from their zoo and expand on it. They change their original dimensions by 3, 4 or 5 times the amount. Say if the original cage was a 4 x 5 and the student zooms in 5 times the amount. The new dimensions will be 20 by 25. The student has room to add extras for their animal, such as trees, water features, rocks and shelters. The draft and the final are done just like the zoo, looking down from the top. The picture is drawn from a visitors perspective looking into the animal's cage.
8. Tri-fold Brochure or Animal report/quiz (due 12/18) - students get to pick to do either. The Tri-fold is an advertisement to get people excited about visiting the student's zoo. Special features of the zoo, like where the animals came from, or new exhibits opening etc, should be highlighted. The animal report consists of researching an animal from the student's own zoo, answering the questions on the attached link and then creating a questions and answer page, also on the attached link.
9. 3-D Zoo Model (due 12/19) - students will create a 3-D model of their zoo from their 2-D blue prints. The project must fit on the students' desk. I have several different desk sizes in my room but the average is around 18 x 24 in. The project must be labeled. If students choose do build their project in Minecraft or similar programs, their project must be displayed on their own device from home or create a Prezi or Powerpoint which can be played on the student Chrome book. Please don't wait until the morning of the presentation and hope technology works. Have your child bring the project in early to test. Here is a few examples of zoos done in the past.
